Israeli forces assault worshipers at Al-Aqsa, detain 1

 22/07/2014
Source: Maan News Agency

JERUSALEM (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces raided the Al-Aqsa mosque compound Thursday and assaulted worshipers while providing security to a group of right-wing Jewish extremists, witnesses said.

Witnesses told Ma'an that a group of settlers entered the Al-Aqsa compounds through the Moroccan Gate while provoking worshipers, who in turn chanted "Allah Akbar," or "God is Great" in Arabic.

Israeli police on the scene then called special police forces to secure the group as they moved through the compound and then out through the Chain Gate, before they reportedly assaulted worshipers with batons and pushed them to the ground causing bruises to many.

The special forces detained an employee who works for the Al-Aqsa endowment office and took him to police station located at the Chain Gate, witnesses said.

Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld confirmed that there were no clashes but "only Arabs shouting Allah Akbar," adding that the individual was detained for "trying to attack the group" that had entered the compound.

Because of the sensitive nature of the Al-Aqsa compound, Israel maintains a compromise with the Islamic trust that controls it to not allow non-Muslim prayers in the area. Israeli forces regularly escort Jewish visitors to the site, leading to tension with Palestinian worshipers.

The compound, which sits just above the Western Wall plaza, houses both the Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa mosque and is the third holiest site in Islam.

It is also venerated as Judaism's most holy place as it sits where Jews believe the First and Second Temples once stood. The Second Temple was destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD.

Al-Aqsa is located in East Jerusalem, a part of the internationally recognized Palestinian territories that have been occupied by the Israeli military since 1967.

Friday in Occupied Jerusalem

14 June 2014
Source: Middle East Monitor

The Israeli occupation has again stepped up its closure policies in East Jerusalem and around al-Aqsa mosque over recent weeks amidst ongoing colonisation projects and renewed calls from extremist Zionist groups to demolish the mosque in order to build the 'Third Jewish Temple'.

Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza cannot reach Jerusalem without special travel permits that are issued by the Occupation. These restrictions usually apply to Palestinian men under 50 and women under 45. Such permits require specific reasons such as urgent hospital appointments to have any chance of success and are often still refused even in emergencies.

Recently, reports have stated that new rules have been imposed allowing only Palestinians with either Jerusalem ID or Israeli citizenship to enter the mosque although these restrictions are not yet being implemented every day.

On some recent days, nobody under the age of 45 has been allowed to enter al-Aqsa irrespective of ID status. This has been applied to Palestinians as well as Muslims with foreign passports. Palestinians have on regularly been forced to leave their ID cards at the entrance to the mosque before entering.

Checkpoints have been installed around the Old City to impose these policies. In some cases, people have been prevented from even entering the Old City area on Fridays without meeting various age limit and ID status restrictions (which already prevented most Palestinians from the West Bank and virtually all from Gaza from reaching Jerusalem). Such policies not only prevent religious freedoms but also strangle the Old City itself including its economy, identity and culture.

Palestinians continue to carry our regular protests against the occupation's policies in East Jerusalem. The recent 'Global March to Jerusalem' was one such event which was tolerated by the Occupation. Conversely, a planned protest in solidarity with Palestinian hunger-striking prisoners was prevented when a wide blockade of the Old City and its surrounding area was enforced on May 30th with flying checkpoints preventing people even reaching the Old City walls. Following Friday prayers on Friday June 13th the Occupation forces were much less evident than on previous weeks before the prayers, yet as a demonstration broke out in solidarity with the hunger-strikers after the prayers occupation forces invaded the mosque compound shooting rubber-coated steel bullets and stun grenades towards worshippers as they attempted to leave. 28 people were injured during these attacks and 8 people were detained.

East Jerusalem is recognised by the international community as the capital of the future Palestinian state. Israel denies this fact and refers to Jerusalem as the 'undivided and eternal capital of Israel' as it continues to colonise as much of the city as possible whilst implementing policies which aim to deny Palestinian access to, as existence in, Jerusalem.

'Thousands' of Israeli Jews to march on Aqsa compound

27/05/2014
Source: Ma'an News Agency

JERUSALEM (Ma'an) -- The Waqf Foundation in charge of the Al-Aqsa Mosque Compound said various Israeli nationalist organizations had called for a march through the compound on Wednesday.

Thousands of Israeli Jews will attend, the organization said, adding that police would close roads in East Jerusalem during the march.

Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld tweeted: "Police complete security assessments for tomorrow's "Jerusalem day" celebrations. Hundreds of officers will be involved in security measures."

Jerusalem Day is a national holiday in Israel celebrating what Israelis call the reunification of the city. The day is marked by marches through the Old City of Jerusalem by right-wing activists.

For Palestinians and the international community, East Jerusalem is considered occupied territory.

Earlier, police escorted Jewish groups through the Al-Aqsa compound, witnesses said. Some 72 Israeli Jews entered the compound as Palestinians chanted "Allahu Akbar."

Rosenfeld tweeted: "Stones thrown at visiting group on Temple Mount by Arabs. Policeman at scene injured lightly. Visits continue regularly. Situation calm."

Israeli forces regularly escort Jewish visitors to the compound, leading to tension with Palestinian worshipers.

Al-Aqsa is located in East Jerusalem, a part of the internationally recognized Palestinian territories that have been occupied by the Israeli military since 1967.

Israeli forces break into Al-Aqsa and attack worshippers

16 April 2014
Source: Middle East Monitor

Tens of worshippers were wounded yesterday when the Israeli army and police broke into Al-Aqsa Mosque and attacked Palestinians inside, eyewitnesses reported

According to locals "many worshipers suffocated from inhaling tear gas and others were bruised after the Israeli forces beat them up with batons."

The injured are being treated inside Al-Aqsa Mosque and the medical centre.

The Israeli forces tried to break into the mosque yesterday morning angering Muslim worshippers and prompting clashes.

An official in the Islamic Waqf who spoke on the condition of anonymity said: "The Israeli army seems to be trying to evacuate Muslim worshippers from the mosque to allow Jewish settlers to storm the mosque."
The Israeli forces and settlers gathered outside the Maghrabi Gate in the western wall which the settlers use to storm the mosque.

Hundreds of Palestinian Jerusalemites and Palestinian citizens of Israel gathered in the mosque to prevent the settlers from storming it.

Extremist Israeli groups called to break into Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Jewish holiday of Passover which began on Monday and lasts a week.

Palestinians, Israeli police clash at Jerusalem holy site

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli riot police entered one of Jerusalem's most revered and politically sensitive religious compounds on Wednesday to disperse rock-throwing Palestinians opposed to any Jewish attempts to pray there.

The confrontation erupted after Israeli police tried to escort some 20 visitors onto the plaza revered by Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary and by Jews as the Temple Mount in Jerusalem's walled Old City.

Palestinian youths, who a Reuters photographer said had gathered inside al Aqsa mosque, ran outside and threw rocks at the group. Israeli police in riot gear pushed onto the plaza and used stun grenades to disperse the demonstrators, but did not enter al Aqsa itself.

Tensions at the site run high during Jewish holidays - Jews are now celebrating Passover - when Palestinians oppose having Jews try to pray on the compound.

Aware of the volatile mix of politics and religion, Israel has largely stymied Jewish prayer on the plaza overlooking Judaism's Western Wall since capturing East Jerusalem along with the West Bank in the 1967 Middle East war.

Police routinely escort foreign and Israeli visitors to the compound and intervene if they make any attempt to hold prayers at the site, which also houses the Dome of the Rock, where Muslims believe the Prophet Mohammad ascended to heaven.

Palestinian concerns have been heightened, however, by the fact that allies of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are among the most vocal advocates of Jewish prayer at the 25-acre complex. A posting on Tuesday on a Palestinian website, "All must defend al Aqsa", called on Palestinians to "stop the Zionists" from entering the area during Passover.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said that once calm was restored, police forces left the plaza but closed it temporarily to visitors. He said no arrests were made at the scene.

Outside the complex, police fired tear gas at Palestinians who scuffled with them, witnesses said. The official Palestinian news agency, WAFA, reported that 25 people were treated for gas inhalation, and a medic said a woman was taken to hospital after being hit by a rubber bullet.

Sovereignty over the compound is at the heart of the Arab-Israeli conflict. Palestinians want to make East Jerusalem the capital of the state they aim to establish in the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

Israel, citing historical and biblical links, regards all of Jerusalem as its capital, a claim that is not recognized internationally.

Israeli committee approves huge synagogue near Al-Aqsa Mosque

01 April 2014
Source: Middle East Monitor

A Palestinian Islamic foundation concerned with protecting the sacred sites in Jerusalem revealed on Monday that an Israeli committee has approved a scheme to build a huge synagogue in the heart of Jerusalem's Old City, only 200 meters away from Al-Aqsa Mosque.

A statement issued by Al-Aqsa Foundation for Endowment and Heritage said that a sub-committee of the District Committee for Planning and Building in Jerusalem, which is affiliated with the Israeli Ministry of Interior, approved during a meeting that took place on Sunday, 30 March 2014 the establishment of a very large synagogue called the Jewel of Israel in the heart of the Old City of Jerusalem.

The synagogue, which will be located only 200 meters to the west of Al-Aqsa Mosque, will consist of four floors, topped by a vaulted dome in addition to an underground space.

According to the foundation's statement, "So far, the Israeli occupation has built about 100 synagogues and Jewish schools in the Old City of Jerusalem and its surroundings, where each Jewish religious school has its own synagogue."

Furthermore, the foundation added that in recent years the Israeli authorities have already built two large synagogues in the Old City; one called Ruin Synagogue, built on the ruins of a mosque in Al-Sharaf neighbourhood, and the second called Beit Yitzhak Synagogue, built on Waqf land, about 50 meters west of Al-Aqsa Mosque.

The Israeli authorities' decision to construct yet another large synagogue in East Jerusalem accelerates the occupation's Judaisation project in the holy city.

The foundation pointed out that: "The occupation plans to Judaise the entire Old City over the next twenty years, so that it will become completely Jewish."

However, the foundation also emphasised that "the resilience and stability of the people of Jerusalem will lead to the failure of the occupation's schemes."

Although the foundation did not mention when the Israeli committee will start the construction of the synagogue in question, the Jewish religious establishment often speeds up the implementation of Israeli settlement schemes in occupied Jerusalem.

Israelis call to present Easter sacrifices in Al-Aqsa

31 March 2014
Source:: Middle East Monitor

Jewish groups are calling on the Israeli public to take part in preparations for events which they hope will take place in Al-Aqsa Mosque on the eve of the Jewish Passover, Al-Aqsa Foundation for Endowment and Heritage has warned.

The preparations are due to take place on the evening of Thursday April 10 at the site west of Jerusalem, when Jewish groups will simulate how to offer Easter sacrifices in Al-Aqsa Mosque in the hope that they would implement this plan in reality on Passover.

In a press release, the Al-Aqsa Foundation added that these Jewish groups had sent a letter to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to convince him to facilitate the procedures of building a synagogue near Al-Aqsa Mosque.

The letter was signed by a number of rabbis and academics.

The Al-Aqsa Foundation called on Muslims to visit Al-Aqsa Mosque more regularly and warned of the repercussions of Jewish extremists' intrusions into the mosque and their schemes against it.

The Foundation said that the latest Jewish calls to storm Al-Aqsa and make Easter sacrifices inside it and also the plans to build a synagogue in the mosque's grounds, constitute "serious indications that the occupation is stepping up its violations of Al-Aqsa Mosque."

Most Jews want to perform Jewish rituals in Al-Aqsa Mosque

13 March 2014
Source: Middle East Monitor

Some 78 per cent of religious Jews want to enter Al-Aqsa Mosque compared to only 18 per cent from the national Haredim, a new poll has revealed.

Published by Maagar Mohot and conducted in cooperation with the Temple Organisations, the survey showed that 45 per cent of secular Jews wanted to enter Al-Aqsa Mosque.

About 80 per cent of the national religious Jews believe that entering Al-Aqsa Mosque has to keep up with the teachings of Judaism, which stipulate carrying out religious rituals upon accessing certain places inside the mosque.

Regarding tourism visits to the mosque, the poll showed that 68 per cent of the national religious Jews want to enter Al-Aqsa as tourists, compared with 60 per cent of secular Jews and 20 per cent of Haredim.
The poll showed that 73 per cent of national religious Jews support building a Jewish temple in Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Commenting on the results of the poll, Al-Aqsa Foundation for Waqf and Islamic Heritage said that this reaffirms that all facets of Israeli society want to invade Al-Aqsa Mosque and build a Jewish Temple in its place.

Peres secretly delivers speech to Arab and Islamic leaders

02 December 2013
Source: Middle East Monitor (MEMO)

Israeli President Shimon Peres addressed a conference held in Abu-Dhabi about two weeks ago that was attended by 29 Arab and Islamic foreign ministers, Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth reported on Monday.
The newspaper described the speech as "historic", pointing out that ministers of Arab countries that have no relations with Israel, such as Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait etc., all listened to Peres and saluted him.
Peres spoke from his office in Jerusalem via video conference. He was sitting in front of Israel's flag and was introduced to the attendees as the president of the State of Israel.
Contrary to what was expected, the newspaper reported that none of the conference attendees left the hall when Peres started speaking. In fact, it said that the leaders applauded Peres.
According to the newspaper, UN Undersecretary Larry Larson and US special envoy to the Palestinian-Israeli negotiations Martin Indick arranged for the speech to take place.
New York Times contributor Thomas Friedman, who attended the conference, finally revealed the details about the speech, which had remained secret for about two weeks.

Protest at Jerusalem Prison Demands Release of Mufti

May 8, 2013
Source: (WAFA)

JERUSALEM, May 8, 2013 (WAFA) – Dozens of Palestinians Wednesday demonstrated outside the Russian Compound prison in West Jerusalem demanding the release of the Mufti of Jerusalem and Palestine Sheikh Muhammad Hussein.
Israeli police arrested Hussein at his home on charges of calling on Muslims to protect al-Aqsa Mosque against attempts by Jewish extremists to infringe on its sanctity.
Palestinian Minister of Jerusalem Affairs Adnan Husseini denounced in a statement what he said was “Israel’s illegal detention” of Hussein, and called for his immediate release.
“We hold Israel fully accountable for this new act of aggression,” he said. “This provocative arrest takes place at a time when Israeli occupation forces are protecting gangs of extremist settlers, who are terrorizing Palestinian families all over Occupied East Jerusalem while celebrating their illegal occupation.”
Husseini accused Israel of violating the religious rights of not only Palestinian Muslims but also Christians when police “repressed and physically assaulted Palestinian Christians, including priests, preventing them from celebrating the important occasion of Holy Fire Saturday.”
He called upon the international community to “take concrete action” against Israel, stressing that “words are simply not enough.”
He said that “the impunity granted to Israel allows it to act without consequence. The Israeli government’s belligerent actions are fueling extremism and systematically destroying the social fabric of the Palestinian people, principally in Occupied East Jerusalem.”

Israel bars Muslims from entering al-Aqsa mosque

Israel bars Muslims from entering al-Aqsa mosque

For two consecutive days, Israeli police have prevented Muslims, men and women under the age of 50, from entering one of the holiest Islamic sites, by erecting flying checkpoints around the compound. All elderly people had to show their ID’s to Israeli police before entering the compound. The Minister of Jerusalem Affairs stated that Muslims now need to unify in order to protect al-Aqsa mosque. The police evacuated all young Muslim worshippers in order to allow a group of 40 Israeli settles to tour the compound. The next day, over 100 settlers gained access to the mosque, accompanied by Israeli forces.
The Al-Aqsa mosque and the Dome of the Rock, is the third holiest site in Islam. However, it is also a site where Jewish Israeli’s believe as the Second Temple, a holy site for Jewish, stood before al Aqsa. But, despite rigorous archeological excavations by the Israeli’s, they have found no proof of the existence of this site.
“Following two days of ban on Muslim worshippers from entering the al-Aqsa compound, senior Palestinian politicians have called upon all Muslims in Jerusalem al Quds to remain in the mosque in order to protect it from Israeli settlers and soldiers. They further stated that the Israeli settlers and soldiers are trying to change the status quo by claiming it as a Jewish place of worship. Nel Burden, Press TV, Occupied Jerusalem al Quds.”

Al-Aqsa Foundation Warns against Demolishing Mosque Passage

26/10/2011
Source: Palestine News & Information Agency - WAFA

JERUSALEM, October 26, 2011 (WAFA) – The al-Aqsa Foundation for Waqf and Heritage in Jerusalem Wednesday warned of dangerous repercussions if the Israeli municipality proceeds to demolish Magharbe Gate passage to al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem’s Old City.
If implemented, it said, it would lead to the demolition of a section of the Mosque itself.

The Foundation called in a press release on the Arab and Islamic world to take immediate action to save al-Aqsa mosque from the Israeli occupation plans.

It said the Israeli decision to demolish the passage, which is in the shape of a wooden overpass that connects the yard of the Western Wall below to al-Aqsa compound, clearly shows Israeli determination to demolish a section of the mosque rather than what it claims that it is simply demolishing a temporary wooden bridge.

“We have repeatedly unveiled through maps, documents and pictures the dimension of the Israeli plan to demolish Magharbe Gate and to build another one in its place as it aims to build a fortified bridge for military reasons to facilitate large scale incursions of fully equipped Israeli forces, settlers and Jewish groups into the Mosque area,” it said.

It considered implementing such a decision as part of targeting al-Aqsa Mosque to assume full control over it through building tunnels and synagogues, which are part of a comprehensive plan to turn it into a Jewish site.

It added that the demolition of the gate could cause damage and cracks in the structure of al-Aqsa Mosque, especially in its western wall, similar to what happened several years ago.

The mufti of Jerusalem, Sheikh Muhammad Hussein, also warned of the consequences of demolishing the passage.

“This Israeli aggression aims to control all entrances to al-Aqsa Mosque thus allowing the occupation forces and herds of settlers to break into the Mosque as they want, leading to serious complications which affects the security of the Mosque and the Muslim worshipers,” he said.

He added that the passage, which the Israeli authorities have tampered with several years ago, would not have become in danger of collapse if it was not for the ongoing Israeli digging underneath the Mosque.

“Al-Aqsa Mosque belongs to Muslims in all parts of the world and no one else has the right to manage, supervise and take care of its affairs,” he said.
The Israeli municipality of Jerusalem claimed that Magharbe Gate passage was in danger of collapse or fire and must be demolished within 30 days.

Aqsa foundation accused IOA of facilitating settlers' desecration of Aqsa Mosque

29/04/2011

Occupied Jerusalem, (PIC)-- The Aqsa Foundation for Endowment and Heritage (AFEH) has accused Thursday that Israeli occupation authorities (IOA) of helping and protecting Israeli settlers desecrating the Aqsa Mosque.

According to sources in AFEH, a group of Israeli female soldiers were seen roaming the plazas of the Mosque under tight protection from tens of Israeli occupation soldiers Thursday.

AFEH added that a group of Israeli engineers carrying maps of the alleged Third temple were also seen strolling inside and searching certain parts of the Mosque, warning that the IOA exploits Jewish festivals to give legitimacy to such provocative desecration measures.

The organization further said that the Palestinian people in Jerusalem and in the 1948-occupied Palestinian land would protect the Mosque at all costs, describing the foundation's activities in the Mosque as the safeguard against those Israeli measures.

"The IOA is trying to create facts on the ground by bringing those settlers into the Aqsa Mosque during Jewish religious occasions in order to create an atmosphere of acceptance in the Palestinian community that those practices are normal," AFEH pointed out.

Israeli forces raid Al-Aqsa Mosque compound

Fri, 05 Mar 2010 11:18:38 GMT

Israeli forces have stormed the courtyards of the Al-Aqsa Mosque in the occupied East Jerusalem Al-Quds and cordoned off its premises where dozens of Palestinian protesters had gathered.

Eyewitnesses said that Israeli policemen had encircled the Al-Aqsa Mosque since the early morning hours and clashes erupted in the holy complex after the Israeli forces raided the area to push out the Palestinians.

The protesters responded to the attack by throwing stones. Several people were injured and dozens more detained in the unrest.

Muslims consider the frequent Israeli attacks on the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound as part of a Judaization campaign that targets the holy city of Jerusalem Al-Quds and a provocation of Muslim feelings.

Israel occupied Al-Quds during a 1967 aggression and later annexed it. The status of the city is among the thorniest issues of the so-called peace process with the Palestinians, underscoring the reality that any Palestinian state should include the city as its capital.

Christians, Muslims warn of moves against Al-Aqsa

Wed, 09 Dec 2009 03:28:53 GMT

Christian and Muslim figures have warned that Israel intends to impose a fait accompli at the Al-Aqsa Mosque as part of its Judaization campaign that targets East Jerusalem Al-Quds.

During an emergency meeting held in Jerusalem Al-Quds on Monday, the attendees stated that such serious moves against the Al-Aqsa Mosque will raise the ire of the Muslim world and cause an international crisis, according to the Palestinian Information Center.

The meeting also addressed the Israeli decisions to prevent a number of Palestinian scholars, preachers, and national figures from entering the Al-Aqsa Mosque and to impose a ban on the Muslim prayer call at Jerusalem Al-Quds mosques and elsewhere in occupied Palestine.

In a joint statement issued at the end of the meeting, the participants emphasized the importance of the Al-Aqsa Mosque in the Muslim faith, adding that the mosque and its entire premises belong to all Muslims.

Israel begins work on new tunnels to storm Al Aqsa Mosque

Middle East Monitor

November 19, 2009

The Al Aqsa Foundation for Endowments and Heritage revealed that the Israeli occupation authorities began excavation works at Al Sharaf alley, tens of meters west of the Al Aqsa Mosque, in preparation for the construction of two tunnels and two electric elevators to connect between the alley, which was confiscated by the Israeli authorities in 1967, and the Al Buraq area and Al Maghariba Gate of the mosque.

The Foundation said that the aim of digging these tunnels and building the elevators is to "deliver a greater number of Jewish settlers to the Western Wall and the doors of Al-Aqsa Mosque, especially the Al Maghariba Gate, through which foreign tourists and Jewish groups can storm into the Al Aqsa Mosque."

The Foundation considered this to be "a judaization project through which Israel seeks to Judaize the Al Aqsa Mosque."

It added that, during a tour it conducted Tuesday, November 17, it found works of deep excavations, by the so-called Israeli Antiquities Authority, in the Al Sharaf alley tens of meters west of the Al-Aqsa Mosque. During these excavation works, historical and archaeological monuments, dating back to Ottoman and Mumluke eras, were being destroyed and obliterated.

The Al Aqsa Foundation for Endowments and Heritage had revealed in a media report on March 3, 2009 the intention of the occupation authorities and its executive arms to dig two new tunnels, one of them 56 meters long and the other 22 meters, in order to link the Palestinian Al Sharaf Alley, in the Old City, to Jerusalem.

It also revealed the Israeli authorities' intention to install an electric elevator in the vertical tunnel and electric corridor in the horizontal tunnel. The location of these two tunnels is to be the meeting point of several archaeological sites, through which Israel "is trying to develop an illusionary Hebrew history."

It explained that this Judaizational project would cost 10 million shekels (about U.S. $ 2.5 million), and will be implemented in collaboration between the occupation's municipality of Jerusalem, the so-called the Jewish Quarter Preservation and Development Company, the Monuments Authority, and the National Insurance Institute. The project will be funded through donations from Baruch Klein.

Al Sharaf Alley is an Islamic area located inside the boundaries of the Old City with an area of more than 133 square meters. It was occupied by Israel in 1967. It is the closest neighborhood to the Moroccan (Al Maghariba) district, which was destroyed by the Occupation authorities on 11/6/1967, after the fall of Al Sharaf Alley. Thousands of Palestinians were expelled from it, their houses, lands, and real estate properties were confiscated; then, private Israeli companies were immediately established. These companies seized the homes, real estate properties and lands of the area and housed the Jewish settlers and built new homes. They changed its name into the Jewish Quarter - and only a handful of Palestinians were left in it, in addition to two mosques - one of them is closed and the other is open only for Dhur (noon) and Asr (mid-afternoon) prayers, with the Azan (call to prayer) being banned.

Jordanians demonstrate against Israeli measures in Jerusalem

Fri, 20 Nov 2009 17:34:12 GMT

Amman - About 3,000 Jordanians demonstrated in Amman on Friday to protest what they called an Israeli conspiracy against al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem, which the Jewish state seized from Jordan in the 1967 Middle East war. The rally, organized by the influential Muslim Brotherhood movement and its political arm the Islamic Action Front (IAF), was held under the slogan "al-Aqsa in Danger".

Participants condemned Arab and Muslim governments for their failure to challenge Israeli attempts to "Judaize" East Jerusalem.

The protesters also claimed that Israel would attempt eventually to demolish al-Aqsa Mosque to rebuild the biblical Solomon's temple in its place.

Speakers during the rally called on the Jordanian government to sever diplomatic ties with Israel and urged Arab countries to back "resistance" against Israeli occupation.

The Jordanian government concluded a peace treaty with Israel in 1994, but the Islamic-led opposition parties and the country's 14 trade unions are still against the pace pact and the normalization of ties with Israel.

Under the provisions of the pact, Israel acknowledged Amman's right to look after all Islamic and Christian holy shrines in East Jerusalem.

A series of raids into al-Aqsa Mosque by Israeli troops over the past months prompted the Jordanian government to accuse Israel of failing to honour its commitments under international law as an occupation power.

Palestinians foil attack on Al-Aqsa worshippers

Mon, 02 Nov 2009 08:20:18 GMT

Al-Aqsa Mosque
Palestinian security guards have foiled a Jewish gunman's attempt to infiltrate the Al-Aqsa Mosque, a Palestinian official reports.

Hatim Abdulqader, who is in charge of the Jerusalem Al-Quds portfolio in the Fatah movement told Arab Newsthat the Palestinian guards succeeded in stopping the gunman as he went up the stairs of a building adjacent to the mosque on Sunday.

The man, who had strapped a machine gun on his back, is believed to have been trying to massacre worshippers in the mosque compound, the report said.

Abdulqader added that Palestinian security forces are working round the clock to foil any Israeli attack against the mosque.

The Al-Aqsa Foundation for Endowment and Heritage has declared that the man was handed over to the Israeli police, who later claimed that he was mad.

Adnan Al-Husseini, the governor of Jerusalem Al-Quds, said the plot “could not be carried out by a mad man.” He accused rightist Jewish movements of planning the incident.

Israel's growing Al-Aqsa attacks 'alarming'

Thu, 29 Oct 2009 08:37:18 GMT

Head of the Manuscripts Department in Al-Aqsa Mosque warns of mounting Israeli violence against the holy site, amid growing protests in the Muslim world against the desecration of the mosque.

Israel has stepped up attacks on the Al-Aqsa Mosque to pave the way for dividing the Muslim world's third holy site, Najeh Bkeirat said on Wednesday.

Tel Aviv's assaults and measures against the mosque have reached more than 1250 cases since the occupation of Palestinian territories in the West Bank, including Jerusalem Al-Quds, in 1967.

Bkeirat warned of an alarming increase in the hostile Israeli measures, recalling twin attacks which targeted the mosque within the same day during the past week.

The Israeli army's drills in the Al-Aqsa Mosque vicinity and barring Palestinians from entering the site is a prelude to a long-planned destruction of the mosque and its change into a Jewish temple.

Meanwhile, large crowds of Egyptian students took to streets in capital Cairo in protest to Israel's violation of the Al-Aqsa mosque and the regime's atrocities against the Palestinians.

Thousands of demonstrators, chanting anti-Israeli slogans, gathered outside the University of Cairo on Wednesday and torched the Israeli flag, IRNA reported.

A similar rally was also held by students of Alexandria University in a show of protests to the Israeli army's intrusion of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

The angry protesters condemned the Arab world's silence to the suffering of the Palestinian nation.

On Tuesday, Israeli forces razed six Palestinian houses in East Jerusalem Al-Quds, leaving their 26 residents, including 10 children, homeless.

Palestinians accuse Israel of efforts to remove the Palestinian-Islamic identity of East Jerusalem Al-Quds, which hosts the Al-Aqsa mosque and the Dome of the Rock.

The Arab dominated neighborhood was occupied during the 1967 war by the Israeli regime, which annexed it later, despite opposition from the international community.

The Israeli municipality authorities have been evicting Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem Al-Quds ever since, demolishing their houses over 'illegal construction'.
