JERUSALEM, May 8, 2013 (WAFA) – Dozens of Palestinians Wednesday demonstrated outside the Russian Compound prison in West Jerusalem demanding the release of the Mufti of Jerusalem and Palestine Sheikh Muhammad Hussein.
Israeli police arrested Hussein at his home on charges of calling on Muslims to protect al-Aqsa Mosque against attempts by Jewish extremists to infringe on its sanctity.
Palestinian Minister of Jerusalem Affairs Adnan Husseini denounced in a statement what he said was “Israel’s illegal detention” of Hussein, and called for his immediate release.
“We hold Israel fully accountable for this new act of aggression,” he said. “This provocative arrest takes place at a time when Israeli occupation forces are protecting gangs of extremist settlers, who are terrorizing Palestinian families all over Occupied East Jerusalem while celebrating their illegal occupation.”
Husseini accused Israel of violating the religious rights of not only Palestinian Muslims but also Christians when police “repressed and physically assaulted Palestinian Christians, including priests, preventing them from celebrating the important occasion of Holy Fire Saturday.”
He called upon the international community to “take concrete action” against Israel, stressing that “words are simply not enough.”
He said that “the impunity granted to Israel allows it to act without consequence. The Israeli government’s belligerent actions are fueling extremism and systematically destroying the social fabric of the Palestinian people, principally in Occupied East Jerusalem.”
